Whenever you hear the word landscaping, the first thing that comes to mind are manicured gardens with well arranged plants. But to make your lawn more elegant, then you have to complement the landscaping by using paving stones for your concrete driveway and patio stones for your patio. Your concrete driveway will sport a new look if you use paving stones. Patio stones on the other hand will transform your patio into a very chic place.

In a previous article we talked about the tragic death of Virginia Graeme Baker and the newly implemented law that her drowning inspired. The new law requires that public pool and spa owners have drains and grates that meet the ANSI/ASME A112.19.8-2007 standard. Where can you find these drains and grates to make sure that your pool is in compliance?

Interlocking Brick Pavers - Types of Pavers

Brick Pavers

A paver is a stone, concrete block or brick that is used to lay on a flat surface to make a patio, driveway or walkway.

The best types of pavers are those that will interlock with the sand that is placed between them.

Traditionally brick pavers were manufactured in 4" x 8" by 1 ½" thick or 6" x 12" by 1 1/2" thick. But with the recent success of interlocking paving stones, many brick manufacturers are now manufacturing a brick paver that has spacers built into the sides to create a space between each paver.

As they are laid in the sand, the joints between each brick are filled with sand. This works to lock the bricks in place much more effectively than placing the bricks side by side without the sand.

The bricks are very stable, and the sand with the brick makes the surface very strong, but still flexible and so withstand varying pressures and even earth quakes.<

Brick Paver

A brick paver that is set in sand is usually 4" x 8" by 2 3/8" thick. It is made out of clay and kiln dried. It is very strong and can test out over 12,000 PSI. It also has all the advantages of interlocking concrete paving stones; strength, crack free and affordable. The surface however is real brick. The paver’s top edges are usually beveled to emphasize and enhance the pattern in which brick are laid. Also the bevel prevents chipping during installation.

Brick Paver Installation

Brick pavers are a bit more costly than concrete paving stones. They are in the $10 per square foot range. See our chart. The area to be paved is excavated not just the thickness of the pavers, but enough for the bedding sand and up to 8 inches of base material. The base used is specifically made for paving stones as well as road base. The finished product has no mortar joints only sand.

Bricks which use mortar give a familiar, traditional appearance, yet, it can be vulnerable to cracking resulting from ground shifts below the surface. The no-mortar, sand-based technique for paving, as mentioned above, has increased in popularity in recent years, because of the ease of installation, durability, strength and cost.

With the increase in sand-based installation, brick makers are producing styles which make these installations as elegant as ones using mortar while basically eliminating the problem of edge chipping and surface cracks.
